I guess I would pull the weeds out but Id be sure to wear gloves. Leaf mould is one of the best mulch types too but in most cases the gardener would have done much better to save the money and keep the leaves in the garden over winter where they can protect the soil. Shredded bark is one of the most common and least expensive types of mulch. Like grass clippings fallen pine needles can also be mixed-up with leaf mulch.
